“My Electronic Idol” - Precocious Neophyte
Precocious Neophyte was one of my favorite acts of Blucifer’s First Rodeo. They’re a shoegaze/dream pop rock band that reminded me of a heavier version of Explosions in the Sky with hints of Tame Impala. I saw them by accident; my wife and I were walking by the Skylark, heard killer rock music, hightailed it up the stairs, and were greeted with the last twenty minutes of Precocious Neophyte’s set. Every song felt like a continuation of an untold musical storyline (I know that doesn’t make sense/don’t care), and I was lost in their music immediately.
They’re all phenomenal musicians, who lose themselves in these beautifully winding melodic music breaks. And it wasn’t all heavy distortion. Their songs flowed from quiet and steadily beating rhythms that rise and fall, and you have moments to catch your breath before they release a torrent of rock energy, drive, and emotion. The main guitarist/vocalist is an incredible front person. They led the crowd in energy and spirit, flipping their hair in coordination of her perfectly-timed notes, while the other guitarist and bassist dance around them on stage to trance-y drum beats. I’m unmistakably a lyrics guy, but didn't care here because their music is objectively good, and the band’s high energy and seasoned performance sucks in your attention. When the show ended, I felt a renewed energy and love for good music.
Song Review: “My Electronic Idol”
To be fair, I do not know if they played this song, but it’s an apt representation of Precocious Neophyte. Excellent, powerful musicianship that toes the line between psychedelic and heavier fuzzier sounds. I had to google both the words “precocious” and “neophyte” after the show, and basically they’re referencing a skillful/high-aptitude beginner. That level of contrast and tension is felt in Precocious Neophyte’s songs that are true melodic journeys and was happy to see they have a lot of music for me to go through.
That’s it. Like I said, this is more of a performance review though I love “My Electronic Idol,” and my review: you need to see Precocious Neophyte live.
