“Legs” - Liquid Chicken

I’ve seen Liquid Chicken play at Bar 404 and in a literal backyard shed at Blucifer’s First Rodeo, and they play explosives sets with high energy that parallels their music. Both shows blew me away.

While this song review is about “Legs,” it’s impossible to talk about Liquid Chicken without also mentioning their 2023 single “Walking.” It creates instant and joyous mayhem. The refrain “I don’t like walking / I like gasoline” is the type of tongue-in-cheek joke that not many bands would attempt, and even fewer nail the execution. Yet, audiences get it and are quick to scream the lines back. That song was a close second to be reviewed and should be your next listen after “Legs.”

Song Review: “Legs”

Any musician will tell you writing hooks is not easy, and Liquid Chicken have at least five great ones in “Legs.” The track begins like the band is already playing to the upper deck of a stadium. The guitars, bass, and drums all find ways to sound instantly huge, even before the central song riff kicks in. And once the main hook does hit, it will be stuck in your head for days.

Possibly the most unexpected thing about “Legs” is how the chorus feels pulled back. After starting with a gigantic hook and a verse built on uncanny vocal swagger, the chorus subverts all classic expectations of quiet/loud dynamics with a focal point built on space and tasteful fills. The guitar walks up with the vocal melody while the rest of the band clears out. Rather than a chorus meant to be shouted, it’s felt; the vocalist unique, pleasantly-toned voice draws attention. The return of the guitar hook and absolutely on-fire drums provides catharsis, and complemented against the restrained chorus brings a different level of “feels” to listeners. By the end of the song, I’m screaming “ah” in my car (or under my breath wherever I am) with the vocalist.

Liquid Chicken is not an easy band to explain. They do so many things so well; their sound is relaxed, seemingly effortless. There’s no band quite like them, and I’m so excited to see them eventually play on massive stages where their sound and songs will fit like a glove. I haven’t heard “Legs” replace “Walking” as Liquid Chicken’s live closer yet, but it’s properly front and center in a catalog filled with thoughtful, well-executed songwriting.
